About Me

                                             PAPIYOT NWE

Papiyot Nwe means black butterfly in the St. Lucian French Patios dialect. I want all children to be a papiyot nwe; to be free as a butterfly, to feel proud of his/her culture and to find a platform to share it with the world.

Many St. Lucian children have grown up in the diaspora with little or no first-hand experience of life on the island. Also, there is little indigenous literature that documents and highlights the common experiences of school-aged St. Lucian children which can connect them and their lives to the literary world. Literacy and reading are vitally important to the development of children and society as a whole. As a parent and as an educator, I have learned that children are more inclined to read about things to which they can relate. Therefore, more culturally relevant children’s literature seems critical for advancing literacy in St. Lucia and the Caribbean. There is a very important need to be filled. This series of books is one St. Lucian writer’s humble attempt to help meet that need.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

This project is the brainchild of Claudette Bekha Charles, born in St. Lucia, grew up in Brooklyn and traveled the world. This is just a small contribution to what she hopes will be a much larger effort to provide the children of St. Lucia, the wider Caribbean, and Caribbean children of the diaspora, with quality literature that is relevant to their identity and life experiences, as well as highlighting the richness, beauty, and value of their island cultures. It’s my sincere hope that by making reading and literature relevant and relatable to our children, we will increase their interest in, and love of reading, and so prepare their minds to access the greater world of literature and knowledge.
